The Elf & The Pearl
The Pearl is a Golding Pearl Improved (c. 1908). It’s a simple clamshell type of platen press. Golding’s Pearl presses are some of the most sought after platen presses in North America today. The Pearls are loved for their aesthetic appeal, printing capability, and relative light weight and small footprint. Elf purchased the Pearl in the fall of 2005. And they’ve been together ever since.
Elf Hi. I’m elf (AKA Melissa.) I like to cook, clean and listen to music. I also live to read. I cannot function without coffee. I enjoy wine. A lot. I am wild for anything dance related. I putter in the garden occasionally. Sometimes I sew things. I like to make stuff. My dad was a carpenter as a hobby – he loved to do things with his hands. I think I am the same way. I’m never happier than when I am completely absorbed in something I am ‘making’.
But what I really love is the art of letterpress. I am a type freak, design junkie, lover of art. I also have a great respect for anything hand-crafted and artisanal in nature. Elf Press is a reflection of that long-standing love for typography and illustration, my fascination with the history of print work, and obsession with "making". My work combines modern ideas with century old equipment and a 550-year-old printing process to tell new stories through unique, inspired paper goods. All of my designs are printed by hand using photopolymer plates.
